My favourite artist of all time is Alan Lee, he did some of the concept art for the Lord of the Rings films and his art is just so inspirational.

Favourite writers have to be all those writing about a post-apocalyptic world; Margaret Atwood, Aldous Huxley, George Orwell, Iain M.Banks and Brian Aldiss. x

George R R Martin....Song of Ice and Fire. He writes fantasy but that aspect takes a back seat to human nature and how it shapes politics and relationships. I have never seen so many subplots that have a legitimate stake in the overall plot.
Its full of the grime and un-speakable things we know exist in real life and they enhance the whole experience.
Just when you hate a character for being a total jerk, all of a sudden you start to like them as you watch their character change when they stumble upon new perspectives.
A must read!!

Ursula Le Guin! She deserves more attention! :)
She writes fantasy (Earthsea cycle), science fiction (The Left hand of darkness, Winterplanet, Hainish cycle) and extremely interesting essays (The Language of the Night) and has a very poetic and captivating style a a special way of viewing things.
Terry Pratchett is also someone whose book's I'm really fond of, though his writing is quite different from Le Guin's...
